The Lancers and Mustangs will renew their rivalry in a regular season contest on Monday, December 16 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan as one of the festival's first events. The game will replace the previously scheduled OUA contest between the two teams scheduled for this Friday (October 25) at South Windsor Arena.
Ā
"We are thrilled to be able to participate in this unique outdoor sporting event," commented University of Windsor athletic director Mike Havey. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our student-athletes and something I know they'll remember forever."
Ā
More than 250,000 people are expected to descend on Comerica Park, the home of the Detroit Tigers, for the SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival, an outdoor celebration of hockey that will start in mid-December. The infield of the Tigers' home ballpark will be turned into a hockey rink and will feature games between teams representing every level of hockey.
Ā
In addition to the Lancers-Mustangs game, the SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival will also feature American Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League, NCAA, high school and youth games throughout the month of December.
Ā
"As a hockey program, this fulfills our mission statement to give our players lifetime experiences that will help them grow as leaders in the community," said University of Windsor head coach Kevin Hamlin. Ā Ā "Having a league game outdoors against our rivals places an even greater importance on the game, and our players wouldn't want it any other way."
