Lancers shine at 2015 Canadian Track Championships

The Windsor Lancers Track and Field program had an outstanding showing at the 2015 Canadian Track and Field Championships in Edmonton, Alberta this past week.

Highlighting the championships was Lancer Corey Bellemore who captured a gold medal in the Men's 800m with a time of 1:51.70. Teammate Alex Ullman also turned in a strong performance as he finished third and earned a bronze medal with a time of 1:52.28.

Bellemore's time won't get him to China for the World Championships but the Riverside high school grad and current Lancer was thrilled to be at the top of the podium Sunday.

"Last year, I was at home watching this with mono," said Bellemore, who came into the meet with the sixth-fastest time in Canada this year. "The goal was to get a medal. I just wanted a medal. I knew (Windsor's Brandon) McBride (ankle) and (Anthony) Romaniw were out, so it opened some room for the other guys. I really wanted to go for the win and hopefully it gets me provincial carding that would get me some money (for training)."

On the women's side, Melissa Bishop captured a silver medal in women's 800 metres as she finished a tactical 800m final in a time of 2:08.60. Melissa will be back on the track in Toronto later this month as she will represent Canada at the Pan Am Games. She also secured her place on Canada's team Sunday for the World Track and Field championships.

"It was a tactical race," said the 26-year-old Bishop, whose personal-best time in the event is 1:59.70. "You had to be in the top three to go to worlds and I knew it wasn't going to be quick. It's been that way for the last years. When there's a (national) team (spot) on the line, it's more about placing than time. I just tried not to get boxed in."

An ankle injury sidelined Bishop for nearly a month in May, but she's managed to rebound and put her season back on track.

"I'm very relieved and very thankful for the team I've had behind me," Bishop said. "The support I've had from Windsor and the therapists in Windsor have taken care to get me back to this form."

Former Lancer teammate Nicole Sassine positioned herself for a spot as well. Having already met the qualifying time standard, Bishop needed a podium finish Sunday in the senior women's 800-metre final at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Edmonton to secure a spot for the national team, which will compete Aug. 22-30 in Beijing, China.

The 25-year-old's fourth-place finish in the women's 400 metres in 52.60 left her in position to be named to Canada's 4×400-metre relay team.

"The plan at this meet was definitely to come here and prove I can be a contributing member on Canada's 4×4 relay at worlds," Sassine said. "I exceeded my coach's and my own expectations and had a breakthrough performance in the semifinals.

"I ran a huge personal best of 52.25 (easily beating her old mark of 53.04). I finished fourth in the final running my second-best time. I'm hoping to hear about worlds sometime this week. I believe I have done my part."

Virginia McLachlan won a pair of gold medals in the women's T37 category. She won the 200 metres Sunday in 33.80 after winning the 100 metres earlier in the meet in 16.40.

Massey high school grad Jordan Young picked up three medals during the championships. Young won a bronze medal Sunday in the senior men's shot put with a throw of 17.96 metres and also won bronze in the senior men's hammer throw with a best toss of 66.63. Young also won a silver medal in the senior men's discus earlier in the meet with a throw of 59.05 metres.

Lancer Arren Young took the bronze medal in the senior men's long jump as he moved into a medal position on his final jump, which measured 7.24 mtetres.

Looking for a spot on Canada's PanAm team, Bailey Dell needed a top two finish to secure a spot. However, she settled for the bronze medal in the junior women's javelin with a throw of 47.12 metres.

Angelo Bortolin also earned a bronze medal in the junior men's trip jump. Bortolin set a new personal best with a leap of 14.62 metres on his second attempt.

Other Lancer finishes of note included Noelle Montcalm who finished fourth in the women's 400m hurdles in a time of 57.10 and Emily Omahen finished sixth in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.86 metres.
