Lancer Fastpitch captures OIWFA Bronze Medal

The women's fastpitch team capped off their season this past weekend with a bronze medal at the Ontario Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch Association (OIWFA) provincial championships held in London, Ontario.   With only the top eight teams making playoffs, the Lancers had a successful regular season that included a 12-game winning streak, to finish with a record of 17-5 and enter championship weekend as the number three seed.

The Lancers started off the weekend with a 5-1 win over the Brock Badgers on Friday night.  Although on Saturday the Lancers fell to the Waterloo Warriors (9-6) and the Laurier Golden Hawks (6-2) in their final round robin games, they advanced to the playoff rounds on Sunday as the 3rd seed in their pool.

The quarterfinals on Sunday morning saw the Lancers face off against the 2013 provincial and national silver medalists, the Ottawa Gee-Gees.  Both teams scored one run early in the game, and the game remained knotted at 1-1 through the 7th inning.  The game entered International Tie-Breaker in the 8th inning, which allows each team to start with a runner at 2nd base.  In the top of the 8th inning, the Lancers scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead.  Ottawa answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to once again tie the game.  After a scoreless 9th inning, the Lancers exploded for four runs in the top of the 10th inning to win the game 7-3.  Brianna Balzer earned the win on the mound for the Lancers, pitching all 10 innings.

In semi-final action, the Lancers again faced 2nd seeded Laurier.  The Lancers surrendered three runs in the 1st inning and the strong Laurier pitching kept the Lancers off the board for most of the game.  Although the Lancers scored one run in the 7th inning, it was not enough as Laurier took the game 3-1.

With the semi-final loss, the Lancers moved onto the bronze medal game against the Toronto Varsity Blues.  The Lancers scored one run in the 1st inning and the game then remained scoreless for both teams until the 6th inning when the Lancers scored two runs to increase their lead to 3-0.  In the 7th inning, Lancer pitcher Balzer shut down the Toronto batters in order in her 22nd inning of the day to secure the victory and the bronze medal for the Lancers.

In the championship game, the Western Mustangs defeated Laurier by a score of 7-0 to claim their 5th consecutive provincial title.

This medal puts the Lancers back on the podium for the first time since their bronze medal finish in 2010.

Brianna Balzer and Kim Moroun were named to the OIWFA All-Star team.  Offensively, Moroun finished the regular season with a .389 batting average and led the team with 28 hits and 11 stolen bases.  Balzer had a .362 batting average and led the team with 11 extra-base hits and 20 RBIs.
