The Windsor Lancers are pleased to announce that three Lancer men's soccer players have been named OUA west division second team all-stars, as announced by the league Wednesday.
Â
Cristian Mayorga and Mike Pio were named at the striker position, while
Dejo Olagbegi was named as the team goaltender. This is the first time that all three athletes have been named to the OUA all-star team.
Â
Pio, a native of Windsor, scored the winning goal for Windsor in the OUA quarter-final upset over McMaster this past weekend to help the Lancers earn their first trip to the OUA Final Four in almost 30 years. Pio scored six regular season goals to help him land him his first all-star selection.
Â
"Pio has been growing in stature from year from year. Not only has he grown physically but has adapted to the mental aspect of the game at the OUA level remarkably well," said Lancer head coach
Steve Hart. "His strength this year has been his ability to hold up the play and bring the rest of the team into position."
Â
Also born and bred in Windsor, Mayorga was the leading scorer for the Blue & Gold with 10 goals during the regular season, while Olagbegi owned a .900 save percentage and two shutouts.
Â
"Mayorga is explosive on the field. His goal to game ratio is excellent, and his free kick ability has been one of the strengths for our team this year," said Hart. "He fully deserves this award following his University of Windsor Rookie of the Year award last year."
Â
"As a fifth year athlete, Olagbegi has had an outstanding career as a goalkeeper here at the University. His command of the penalty area and his reflex saves are without a doubt at a professional level," Hart continued. "He has been an amazing co-captain this year leading the players both on and off the field, and he will be sorely missed next year as we wish him all the best in his future endeavors."
