Lancer Track and Field and Cross Country Head Coach
Dennis Fairall is one of eight local sports icons who will be inducted as part of the 2012 class of the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame.
The announcement was made on Wednesday and includes three in the founders category and five in the athletes category, who will be inducted in the 32nd class at the Caboto Club on October 13.
Joining Coach Fairall will be former NHLers Bob Boughner and Tie Domi, former Major League Baseball player Stubby Clapp, former CFLer Tony Dennis and former Canadian amateur women's golf champion Laura-Henderson-Matthews.
Fairall, a native of Tillsonburg, Ontario is the most decorated head coach in the history of Canadian University Athletics.
He transformed the Lancer Track and Field program into the elite program in all of Canada, winning 24 CIS National Championships and 43 Ontario provincial titles in track and field and cross country.
Incredibly, he has been honoured a record 38 times as the CIS and OUA Coach of the Year in track and field and cross country.
This past season, he led the Lancers to another sweep of the OUA Track and Field titles and helped the Lancer women captured their fourth consecutive CIS national title.
"When you look at some of the poeple who have been inducted into this hall of fame in track and field, it's quite a thrill to be joining them," commented Fairall. "When I took over the program, I didn't want to just develop athletes, I wanted to build a program that could win national championships. Here we are 24 titles later."
Congratulations Coach Fairall of this very deserving honour.
