WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers Football team will travel to London, Ont. this weekend looking for an upset.
The Lancers will take on the CIS No. 8 ranked Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon in the OUA quarter-finals. The game will be carred live across Canada on The Score television network with coverage beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Coach D'Amore's squad (3-5) dropped their third game in as many weeks last Saturday, as they were upset by the Waterloo Warriors on the road by a score of 48-29.
The defeat dropped the Lancers to fifth place in the OUA conference and spoiled a record-setting day for wide receiver
Jordan Brescacin. The Tecumseh, Ont. native became the OUA's all-time reception leader by recording eight catches and totalling 191 for his university career, breaking the record once held by Andy Fatuz (189). His eight grabs also made Brescacin the conference's all-time leader for most receptions in a single season with 67 overall.
However, Brescacin's contributions could not overcome six Lancers turnovers and 32 second-half points by the Warriors, handing Windsor its third straight defeat heading into the post-season.
Quarterback
Austin Kennedy ended the regular season at the top of the CIS with a nation-leading 329.6 passing yards per game. The Windsor native finished second in the country with 18 touchdown passes, and will look to cut down his turnovers heading into Saturday's match-up. Brescacin garnered the second-most receiving yards per game (122.4), while tying for the most touchdown receptions in the CIS (8).
The Lancers will meet a Western (5-3) squad whose three losses came at the hands of Guelph, McMaster and Queen's, all teams who finished higher than the Mustangs heading into the playoffs. The Mustang offense ranks second in the country in points scored (327), and is led by the leading CIS rusher Garret Sandivo who garnered a nation-best 1001 total yards rushing (125.1 per game). He also tallied a nation-best 13 rushing touchdowns for the Mustangs.
This is the second visit to Western for the Lancers, who were defeated 46-23 on September 22. Sandivo recorded 209 yards and two touchdowns against Windsor in their last meeting, while Brescacin tallied 149 yards on 11 catches and a touchdown.
The winner of Saturday's match will either take on the undefeated No. 1 McMaster Marauders (8-0) or No. 5 Guelph Gryphons (7-1) in the OUA semi-finals next weekend. The other quarter-final has the No. 6 Queen's Gaels hosting Laurier in Kingston, Ont.
The match between Windsor and Western can be seen live on The Score television network with coverage beginning at 1:00 p.m.
