Vallée named to Canadian Junior National Team coaching staff

Chantal Vallée, Head Coach of the Windsor Lancers Women's Basketball program has been named as an assistant coach for the Canadian Junior National Women's Team, as announced by Canada Basketball.

Canada Basketball also announced the schedule and camp rosters, featuring the best and brightest female stars ages 15-18 from across the nation. They will vie for a coveted spot on Canada's national team which will compete in upcoming FIBA qualification and world championship events.

The Junior Women's National Team tryouts and training camp will be held at the University of Toronto Mississauga campus in Mississauga, Ont. The 2010 invitational tryout starts from June 9-10, followed by a training camp from June 11-18.

Vallée is entering her sixth season as the Head Coach of the University of Windsor Women's Basketball program. The native of Montreal, Quebec has built one of the top collegiate women's basketball programs in the country since arriving at Windsor.

In 2009-10, Vallée's squad matched their program's best ever record, finishing 21-1 in conference play. They went on to capture their second straight conference championship and second straight OUA Provincial Championship en route to a CIS National Silver Medal at the CIS Championships in Hamilton.

Chantal was named the 2009-10 OUA West Coach of the Year for her team's tremendous play.

“I am very excited and honoured to be named as part of Canada Basketball's coaching staff for the National Women's Junior Team,” commented
Vallée. “This will be a great opportunity for me to gain further experience at the national level and I am really looking forward to coaching some of the top junior women's players in the country.”

Following the training camp, the Junior Women's National Team will travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado to compete in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship tournament from June 23-27. Canada is placed in Group A and will play its preliminary round games against Mexico, Chile and Costa Rica. 

Canada's Junior Women's National Team has fared very well in international qualifying tournaments as they have qualified three consecutive times for the Women's World Junior Championship.

“Our sole objective is to make sure we qualify for the FIBA U19 World Championships in 2011,” added head coach Rich Chambers. “We want to play extremely hard and reach our potential. I have great faith that our team in Colorado Springs will represent Canada well and will play with great poise and tenacity.”

In 2008-09, Vallée and the Lancers made history as she led her team to a 21-1 record, their first ever OUA Provincial Championship title and a trip to the CIS National Championships in Saskatchewan.

In recognition of her outstanding coaching accomplishments, Chantal was named the 2008-09 Fox 40 OUA Coach of the Year as well as the Gino Fracas University of Windsor Coach of the Year.

Previously, Vallée has also served as the Head Coach of the Quebec Provincial team that won a bronze medal at the 2002 National Championships in New Brunswick.

Chantal has a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Quebec-Montreal and a Master of Physical Education degree in Coaching and Sport Psychology from McGill University.
