The Windsor Lancers are pleased to announce that Mary Caton from the Windsor Star has become the first female to capture the OUA Media Award, as announced Thursday night the annual OUA awards ceremony.
Mary has been a sports reporter for the Windsor Star for over 25 years and has covered our various Lancer teams each year throughout their respective varsity seasons since she was hired.
Specifically, she covers Lancer Basketball, Volleyball and Track and Field and her reporting helps keep our fans and followers abreast of our progress and up to date with all the latest news and results.
During her time with the Star, she has travelled across the province and country to cover the Lancers at championship events, including out to Halifax for the men's basketball nationals in 2007.
Born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, Mary graduated from the University of Ryerson with a BAA in journalism in 1979.
While in school, she played two years of volleyball for the Rams before switching to basketball in third year. In her final season as a Ram, she was named team MVP and Ryerson's female athlete of the year in 1979.
Mary was hired by the Windsor Star as a summer sports intern in 1979, before being hired fulltime to work as a news reporter in the paper's Chatham bureau that December. She moved back into sports the following year where she covered local sports, including the Windsor Lancers.
Living in a city where 4 major professional sports teams compete only 20 minutes away, Mary's efforts have helped to ensure that our Lancer teams have remained relevant and received fair and accurate coverage throughout the years.
