Bishop breaks oldest school record; Lancers excel at Team Challenge

Bishop broke Maxine Walkes 22 year old school record in the Women's 600 metres
Fourth year middle distance runner Melissa Bishop made history on Saturday afternoon as she broke the University of Windsor's oldest track record in the women's 600m  at the 21st annual Team Challenge.

With a gold medal time of 1:31.25, Bishop took over the school's all-time top spot which had previously been held by Maxine Walkes since 1988, in 1:31.44.

In other track events, Nicole Sassine also had an outstanding day placing first overall in the 300m (40.66), and capturing silver in the women's 60m with a time of 7.66s.

Two Lancers qualified for the CIS Championships in the 60m Hurdles, with Noelle Montcalm winning gold in 8.40, while Charelle Anobile placed third in 8.80. 

The Lancer women's relay teams also had an excellent day on the track with the 4x200m team of Montcalm, Sassine, Anobile, and Danielle Harrison placing first in 1:40.00 to qualify for nationals.

The 4x400m team of Andrina Slegers, Donia Oumesour, Anobile and Jaide Lyons won silver in 3:59.40, while in the women's 4x800m the Lancers had two teams medal in the gold (9:37.35) and bronze (10:16.45) positions.

In field events, Erika Reiser had another strong performance with a gold medal finish in the pole vault with a height of 3.82m. Jenn Tomayer finished right behind her in second at 3.55m.

On the men's side, the Lancers dominated the 1500 metres sweeping the top four spots. Adam Kellar led the way in first with a CIS qualifying time of 3:52.49, Andrew Aguanno finished second at 3:52.93, Dave Weston was third in 3:53.24, and Matt Walters placed fourth in 3:53.88.

Mitch Tome also captured a gold medal in the men's 600m with a time of 1:20.73, while Dustin Eldridge was second at 1:21.01.

In the relays, the team of Brendan Dills, Justin Keating, Chris Reid and Shayne Rice finished first in the 4x200m in a time of 1:28.10, while Eldridge, Tome, Walters and Kellar finished first in the 4x800m (7:52.23).

Dills, Reid, Camilio Quevedo, and Steve Lamarche also placed second overall in the 4x400m in 3:23.29. 

In the field events, two sport athlete Josh Edwards qualified for the CIS championships in his first meet of the year with a gold medal leap of 2.00 metres in the men's high jump. 

The Lancers swept the podium in the event with Anthony Dandie placing second with a height of 1.91m, and Andrew Foster, also a two sport athlete, finishing in  third at 1.88m in his first meet of the year. 

Jeff Vukasovic captured a gold in the men's pole vault (4.75m), while Mike Miller rounded out the Lancer medals with a gold in the Shot Put with a throw of 16.78m.

The Lancers will now travel to the Silverston Invitational on February 20th before they begin preparations for the OUA Championships on February 26th & 27th at York University.
